Letter written by Capt. W. Davis

St Diego April 28 1825

Wm. Hartnell Esq

Sir

I embrace this opportunity of wrighting[sic] to you as I have every other one that offered but am sorry you hace been so sparing on your part. The Young Tartar arrived here on Saturday last with 2780 Hides they were all discharged yesterday in good order except about 40 which is not fit to come on board we shall have them all on board by the middle of next week and stowed. Making altogether some 8400. We have received from this Mission 728. We now want upwards of 2000 to fill up therefore your presence or orderes is very necessary either for dispatching the Young Tartar for more Hides or dispatching us to England. I sincerely hope the latter will be your determination. I cannot say who is to blame for our long detention on the Coast six months but I can assure you had I been aware of it no inducement should have made me undertake the voyage. You are now on the point of getting a partner[Hartnell was about to get married] therefore probably will feel what I already do a long disappointment of meeting my wife and family who I believe are now very unhappy with not knowing where I am. Snr. Arguila has had some words with Capt. Smith. I am sorry my countryman was in the wrong you I hope will settle all. I have received every kindness and attention from him since my arrival indeed more so than from your agent who God knows is of little use being without Money or [??].

I have been to St Luis Rey to see if I could buy the Hides he has about 1100. he informed me they are sold to Manchusta who will embark them at St Juan Capistrano but I have no doubt by your presence you may get them. You will excuse this interference of mine with your private concerns as I have done it for your interest.

I am in great hopes you will bring Mrs H with you here anything in the Esther will be at your service if you had only mentioned the day of your intended happy nups. I should have had your Friends down on board and if possible ? Your Wedding day all the ?? in my power but now shall refer it to some future time. You will please to bring at least 6 or 8 Lbs of Tea for now as I have none on board if you cannot get it from Capt ?....................................?

Please give my kind respects to your intended bride and best wishes for your future happiness.

I remain Sir

Your obd. Servt.

W. Davis
